One of the many reasons I love our school

In the mid-afternoon, there are many tefillin bags lying around our school's lunchroom. Every so often, one of the boys forgets to bring his home on Friday afternoon. (Tefillin are worn every non-holiday weekday morning except Saturday.)

This means that sometimes, there are tefillin bags that are left in the school over the weekend. Our wonderful high school principal writes these "love notes" on the bags for the boys to find on Monday morning.

Tefillin love note

The note says:

I missed you on Sunday.
Please take me with you next weekend.

Love,
Your tefillin

I'm told that ever since our principal started doing this, the number of tefillin bags forgotten over weekends has decreased significantly.

  1. Aww. That's cute. One of my brother's teachers lent him tefillin to wear while in Israel (he is on a school trip there right now). I heard from him the other day that he put on tefillin for the first time at the Kotel. When a teacher takes an interest in the kids he teaches it really makes such a difference.

  2. Fern,
Mazal tov for you and your brother! This is very exciting!
Maybe he'll buy tefillin while in Israel! (Does he have the cash for that with him?)

I think the teachers' strategy before the notes was either to ignore the tefillin bags or to hassle the kids with guilt. The positive, gentle nudge of the notes has been so much more successful (and caring, and fun.)
